Symposium and exhibition: Introducing the Workhome

16 February – 4 March 2011 | Forum and Gallery

The workhome is a centuries old, but neglected, building type that combines dwelling and workplace.  It has never been studied systematically before, but it has immense contemporary relevance.  Home-based work is a popular, family-friendly environmentally sustainable working practice.  It is good for both the economy and the city, creating busier and therefore livelier and safer local neighbourhoods.  The home-based workforce is currently growing very rapidly all over the world but we do not generally design for it, at either the urban or the building scale.  The Coalition Government has a radical new policy that pledges to lift the ban on social tenants starting businesses in their homes.  This makes designing for home-based work a live policy issue.
