The second city: studies on Porto and its peripheries

3 – 10 February 2011 | Gallery

In conjunction with the lecture ‘An Architectural Exchange Between Britain & Portugal,’ MA&DE and Diploma Unit Two invite you to an exhibition of students work about the city of Porto and its peripheries.

The exhibition will include a film of the students conversation with Álvaro Siza which took place in Porto in December 2010.

The aim of Diploma Unit Two is to produce useful and thoughtful architecture that demonstrates that it is both a discipline and a practical and poetic art. Renovating the urban realm in order to renew what is best about human society and city life (Renovatio Urbis) was the traditionally the shared endeavour of architects, patrons and artists. Unit Two continues to consider the effects of technology upon river-based cities and of the relationships between sculpture and architecture that reveal the communicative nature of public life generally: the common ground of the city.

Unit Two have adopted the same ethos as the Porto school of architecture and before their first field trip to Porto, they worked with the artist Hilary Koob-Sassen using clay and plaster to represent study sites at the scale of a city, and the scale of a room.
