East – lecture

Thursday 30 April 2009, 6:30pm

One of the reasons that we like to work in London is that whilst the city is in a constant state of adjustment, it is also tolerant of change. We find ourselves working on projects that require various ways to take a grasp on a place and a community, rather than stamp a new building on a site. Our primary motivation as architects is not to design architecture, but to discover, prescribe and give shape to the need for it. Reinvigoration is what we seek, towards a role for architecture that is expansive, rather than tight and defined.

Our projects vary in many ways, and architecturally they may have little in common, but what they share is an engagement with their place. The architecture is embedded as the latest part of a new urban picture, and in this way urbanism is about a kind of ‘joining in’.
