Exchange: Patrick Lynch and Camilo Rebelo

Tuesday 9 March 2010, 6:00pm, Forum

MA&DE hosts Celebration Week’s opening evening lecture: a cultural, educational and architectural Exchange. Starting from the work of an invited guest and a staff member, the debate will focus on the duplicities inherent to space-making in the current context, questioning the re-localization of references and the traditional collaboration between art and architecture. Exchange will be extended to the academic ground, allowing for reflections on how reciprocity is fundamental for shaping our architectural culture.

Patrick Lynch was born in 1969 in Reading. He studied architecture at Liverpool University 1987-93 and holds a Master of Philosophy degree in The History and Philosophy of Architecture from Cambridge University 1995-6. He is a director of Lynch architects since 1998 alongside Claudia Lynch, and he teaches at London Metropolitan University having previously taught at The Architectural Association, Kingston University and University College Dublin. He represented Ireland at The Venice Architecture Biennale in 2008. Lynch architects are currently working on a public library and affordable housing in Westminster and recently won the design competition for Barking Abbey Green, where they are building a small museum.

Camilo Rebelo was born in 1972 in Porto (Portugal). He graduated at Faculty of Architecture of Porto – FAUP in 1996. He collaborated at Souto Moura Arquitectos in 1994-8 and at Herzog & de Meuron in 1998-9, before establishing his own office in 2000. He teaches at FAUP since 1999 and was a visiting Professor at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne – EPFL in 2008-9 and 2009-10. He was distinguished with 1st prize in the competition for the Museum of Art and Archaeology of the Côa Valley in 2004 and honourable mention in a competition for the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw in 2007. He lectured in Portugal and abroad: Fundação de Serralves-Porto, Swissport’09 – Porto, Pecha Kucha – Lisbon, Star Tracking – Lisbon, École d’Architecture – Nancy, KTH Royal Institute of Technology – Stockholm, Facoltà di Architettura – Venezia, Cornell University – New York, École Polytechnique Fédérale – Lausanne, Maison de l’architecture – Geneva.
