Thomas Wiesner: patamatic cinema

Tuesday 24 November 2009, 6:00pm, Forum

This lecture was reviewed by Pete Youthed on 4 December 2009.

Since August 2005 Thomas Wiesner has posted more than 734 (and counting) video works under the moniker of Sam Renseiw on the web 2.0 videoblog Spacetwo:Patalab.

Characterized by a keen attention to the inconspicuous in architectural environments, the videos are oblique essays that play with personal, narrative, and documentary cinematic conventions. The project’s serendipitous, diaristic approach is counter-balanced by pataphysical connotations. The videos attempt to exhaust places and events with a clinical yet subjective and inquisitive gaze, and similar to Alfred Jarry’s science of imaginary solutions produce quietly absurd re-visions of normality. Thomas Wiesner will talk about Spacetwo:Patalab and present a selected number of architectural video works made for what has become one of the longest running and most prolific video-blog projects on the web.

Thomas Wiesner is Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, and also teaches conceptual space awareness to choreography – and stage design students at the Danish Theater School.
